What each symptom of broken Hebrew in a DWG link in Revit means
Broken Hebrew in a DWG link shows up as four recurring symptoms: Latin letters such as c,herv, sequences such as %%U, boxes and question marks, and reversed or mirrored text. The table says what each one means and which page to go to. The VIT DWG Editor tool fixes them inside Revit.

Lookup table: symptom, meaning and the page that fixes it
L-05.1| Symptom | What it means | The page that fixes it |
|---|---|---|
Meaningless Latin letters, for example c,herv | The Hebrew was typed on a Hebrew keyboard while the system was set to English, so the file stored Latin letters. Only the drawing font (SHX) showed them as Hebrew, and Revit does not display it. | Gibberish instead of Hebrew |
Sequences such as %%U | AutoCAD formatting codes, or an old Hebrew encoding that was converted wrongly along the way. | Gibberish instead of Hebrew |
| Boxes and question marks | Revit does not support AutoCAD's drawing fonts and picks another font, which does not display the characters. | Gibberish instead of Hebrew |
| Reversed words, "ןולס" instead of "סלון" | The Hebrew was stored in visual order, and Revit draws the same characters left to right. | Reversed Hebrew in the link |
| Text like a mirror image, which also moves | The text is marked by an old convention so that AutoCAD shows it mirrored. Revit ignores the marking, and the anchor shifts by the text's full width. | Mirrored text |
For the causes in detail: why Hebrew breaks in Revit.
One-line example for each symptom
L-05.2c,hervappears where the word "בתקרה" should be.%%Uappears in the middle of a label instead of formatting.- Boxes or question marks appear in place of a whole word.
- "ןולס" appears instead of "סלון".
- A Hebrew label looks like a mirror reflection, and jumps from its place when you edit it.
Which symptoms VIT DWG Editor fixes and which it does not
L-05.3VIT DWG Editor, a tool in the Vitruvius plugin, fixes all five symptoms in the table with one click, inside Revit and without opening AutoCAD. The button is "Fix Text", and the steps are in how to fix gibberish and reversed Hebrew.
The fix is written to the link's DWG file, and a backup of the original file is saved before every fix. "Restore Text" returns the link to its original state.
This page documents only symptoms that the site's problem pages describe. A symptom that is not in the table is not promised as handled.
Frequently asked questions
L-05.4What is c,herv in a DWG link?
It is Hebrew that was typed on a Hebrew keyboard while the system was set to English, so the file stored Latin letters. AutoCAD showed them as Hebrew using a drawing font (SHX). Revit does not display that font, so the Latin letters appear exactly as they were stored.
What is %%U in a label that looks broken?
%%U is an AutoCAD formatting code that marks an underline. When Revit shows it as text, it means the label was stored with formatting codes, or with an old Hebrew encoding that was converted wrongly. It is not part of the word, and you do not need to retype it.
Why do I see boxes and question marks instead of Hebrew?
Revit does not support AutoCAD's drawing fonts and picks another font in their place. When the chosen font cannot display the characters stored in the file, boxes or question marks appear. The cause is the difference between the two programs, not a flaw in the file the consultant sent.
Can I fix this just by swapping the font?
No. Swapping a font changes the shape of the letters, not their order, so it does not solve reversed Hebrew. Latin letters such as c,herv also stay Latin in any font. The fix is applied to the text in the link itself, not to the display settings.
Does the fix change the consultant's file?
The fix is written to the link's DWG file, but a backup of the original file is saved before every fix. If the result does not suit you, or you receive a new version from the consultant, "Restore Text" returns the link exactly to the state it was in before the fix.
Do I need to open AutoCAD to fix it?
No. The fix runs inside Revit, with one click on "Fix Text", and AutoCAD only has to be installed on the computer. There is no settings file to edit, and an automatic backup of the file is saved before every action. You work directly on the consultant's file, with no extra step in another program.
